Cancer survivors often have a strong desire to help others but many at times do not know how to go about it. The Cancer Angels Network (C.A.N.) is a volunteer program designed for cancer survivors and those who have come in close contact with cancer. These are a very special group of people whose encounter with cancer has enriched their knowledge, experience and makes them great ambassadors for cancer prevention, early detection and a pillar for those getting treatment. It allows them to give back to the community in a manner that no other group can.
These volunteers will become resources and activists in the community to educate, support and overcome barriers of fear and silence that surround the subject of cancer. They will do so by reaching out to others in the community. In doing this, they will help educate, support and become resources for prevention, early detection and better treatment of cancer. Most importantly, the Cancer Angels will be a community resource by becoming walking advocates for cancer awareness.
When a patient is first diagnosed with Cancer, they will have the opportunity to be matched with a Cancer Angel. With a personal Angel, some patients may have an easier time asking questions and sharing their concerns. The Cancer Angels can give guidance on what to expect, and how to navigate the healthcare maze.
Cancer Angels will be trained and use their personal experience to become community guides in the field of cancer. They will also provide educational materials and other resources to give to the patients that they mentor and to pass out to the community members.
